Course Summary
The eCourse on Developing Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Healthcare is a 4-month online certificate programme (6 modules, 18 credits) tailored for health and allied health professionals. The course introduces participants to the principles and practices of environmentally sustainable healthcare, with an emphasis on reducing the sector’s ecological footprint while enhancing the resilience of health systems. It offers a blend of conceptual understanding and practical approaches to integrate sustainability into healthcare delivery.
Course Description and Introduction
Healthcare facilities are both frontline responders to climate change and contributors to it through greenhouse gas emissions and waste. This course equips professionals to apply sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective practices in healthcare operations. Participants will learn to:
Understand impacts of climate change on health.
Navigate policies and guidelines.
Apply sustainability measures in healthcare.
Use data-driven strategies to improve resilience.
Develop sustainability and resilience plans for facilities.
Why this course?
Healthcare facilities are the first responders for humans suffering from outcomes of climate change across diseases and natural disasters. Healthcare facilities however also contribute to climate change particularly through the emission of Green House gases and burdening the environment with medical wastes. If it were a country, the health sector would be the fifth largest climate polluter on the planet. There are clear guidelines on how healthcare facilities can contribute to climate resilient health systems through effective management of energy, light and water by transforming their utilization and conservation. To do this, health facilities will need trained human resources that manage, monitor and document the transformative practices towards climate resilient health practices at healthcare facilities. This course is an opportunity for those who are or aspire to be involved in healthcare delivery to contribute to a green planet by informed actions towards economically viable, efficient and environmentally sustainable actions.
