Background
eCourse in Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis is a three-month eLearning program designed to cover all aspect of systematic review and meta-analysis and will provide participants with hands-on experience with the software and practical aspect of the subject. The course has been developed by Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar (IIPHG). It will be delivered by a multidisciplinary team from IIPHG and experts in the field.
Aim and purpose
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are method of evidence synthesis that present results by combining and analyzing data from different studies conducted on similar research topics. These methods are considered to produce highest quality of research and recently there is an upsurge in the number of systematic review and meta-analysis being conducted by various field experts. This method of research is extremely useful in the era where a huge amount of research is produced each year, often with conflicting findings. In those instances, systematic review and meta-analysis can offer scientifically sound and powerful alternatives that can overcome the difficulties in addressing bias, heterogeneity and quality of the studies. However, often poorly conducted systematic review and meta-analysis could yield misleading results. Therefore, various guidelines have been suggested for conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses to help standardize the independent study findings and to improve their quality.
The eCourse will comprise of lectures, assignments and hands-on sessions and is structured in manner to foster the discussions and brain storming among the resourced and skilled faculty and participants around the fundamental concepts of systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
List of modules: There will be five modules:
1. Introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis and its importance in health care
2. Guidelines for conducting systematic review and meta-analysis
3. Developing a basic framework of Protocol for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
4. Research hypothesis development and designing of search strategies, data extraction and data validation
5. Orientation and handson practice for commonly used software’s
6 Risk of bias, quality assessment, sensitivity and subgroup analysis
Evaluation/Assessment: Evaluation and assessment of the course will be online based multiple- choice questions, written assignments/proposal.
