He has done MBBS in 1981, MD in Preventive and Social Medicine in 1987 from Gujarat University, Master of Public Health in 1982 and Doctor of Public Health Degree from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University, USA in 1990. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in USA. He joined as faculty at IIM Ahmedabad in 1991 and work there for 20 years. He has also worked as Senior Management Advisor to the Averting Maternal Mortality and Morbidity (AMDD) program of Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, New York. His areas of interest include management of Maternal Health programs and health systems improvement, quality of care, reproductive healthcare, and management of services. Since February 2012 he is the director of IIPHG and before that he was dean (academics) for one year at the same institution.
He has delivered lectures at several health and management institutes. He has published many articles in professional journals, written book chapters and working papers. He has developed courses on services management & health and hospital management for PGP students at IIM Ahmedabad. He has taught course on public management to FPM students. His current work includes management of maternal health programs, quality of health services and top management capacity for health. He has been a consultant/advisor to several international organizations including Columbia University, WHO, UNICEF, CARE, Aga Khan Foundation, UNDP/World Bank and government of India's health and family welfare departments and state governments.
He has been a member of several PROGRAM & scientific advisory committees including GAVI Switzerland, Mother Care project USA; NIHFW, New Delhi; IIPS, Mumbai; IIHMR Jaipur; IMMPAC Project University of Aberdeen UK, government of India, Planning commission of India etc. He was appointed by the Prime Minister to the Missions Steering Group of the National Rural Health Mission constituted by the Government of India in 2005. He was also member of the steering group on Health for the 12th five year plan constituted by the Planning Commission of India and similar group constituted by Government of Gujarat.
