About the course
India currently has one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. More than half of all death in children in India is attributed to malnutrition. In order to address this “not so silent” emergency, nutrition has received renewed attention by all stakeholders of the country particularly at the highest level of policy making. The workshop on “Nutritional Management of Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)” aims at enabling the participants develop technical competencies in nutrition service delivery targeted towards children with undernutrition at the facility as well as the community level. The workshop will focus on core principles of pediatric nutrition with key focus on infant and young child feeding practices, growth monitoring and promotion, community and facility based management of children with SAM and principles of behaviour change communication in providing effective nutrition education to the care givers for long term management.
General principles of child nutrition and nutritional requirements in infancy and childhood.
Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices
Principles of Behaviour Change Communication (BCC)
Nutrition education and counselling
Assessment of nutritional status, growth monitoring and promotion, hands-on session on growth monitoring
Child undernutrition: screening, detection and referral
Facility based management of severe acute malnutrition

Applying principles of nutrition education and BCC for planning counselling sessions, follow up and compliance
Who should attend?
This workshop is recommended for program functionaries of ICDS functionaries at the NRCs, MTCs and CDCs including pediatricians, ANMs and nutrition counselors

The registration fee includes course kit, lunch and snacks. Please note that the participants will have to bear their own travel, boarding and lodging expenses. However, the organizers will be able to provide a list of hotels or guesthouses nearby the institute upon request
The workshop will be led by Dr Suparna Ghosh-Jerath who is nutritionist and works actively in the area of maternal and child health nutrition. She is actively involved in teaching public health nutrition at IIPH-Delhi and conducting research in core area of maternal and child health nutrition among the vulnerable communities like urban slum dwellers and tribal communities. She also works in the area of food and nutrition policies for prevention of chronic diseases in India.
The other visiting faculties include pediatric nutritionists, pediatricians and experts in nutritional biochemistry, who are engaged in training and providing nutritional care to undernourished children and health communication experts.
