Last date of registration: February 17, 2017
The application of epidemiological concepts is an essential component of evidence?based public health research. Study design is a key element in epidemiology that decides the success of a research project. Although trials are considered as the 'gold standard' as far as study designs are concerned, these are not always feasible to conduct. In such situations, observational studies prove to be valuable tools for establishing relationships between exposures and outcomes. These study designs, however, have certain intrinsic characteristics which need attention at the planning and execution stages. This workshop intends to provide an in?depth understanding of the aspects related to the design, conduct and analyses of observational studies, elaborating on cross?sectional, case?control and cohort study designs.
At the end of the workshop, the participants are expected to be able to describe and design an observational study and conduct analyses of datasets emerging from the use of such studies..
Topics to be covered
Introduction to the various observational study designs
Planning an observational study
Understanding the biases and confounding in observational studies
Sample size estimations and power analysis
Analyses of observational studies (bivariate and multivariable), using dummy datasets
Critical appraisal and reporting of observational studies
